best solution is to carry a 2nd battery. There's no way around the crappy battery life of the g1.

You can get a generic battery + charger for $12 on ebay.

I'm not so sure its necessary to turn off calendar and contacts sync. Android syncing is push, so the phone isn't constantly polling, so if you aren't making any changes to calendar or contacts, its not going to affect your battery life.

I gmail to grab all my email from my two domains
As well I use K-9 to author my email, but I do not have it set to retrieve my email.

This Saturday I turned my phone on at 7:30am and I turned it off at 1:30am and I had over 50% battery left. I always turn my phone off at night just so it can be fresh in the morning and I hate getting messages while I try to sleep.

I even have vibrate and ring and SMS popup installed. I talk all day with the wife on Gtalk, Text message and surf. Occasionally I use Wifi at home.

To those of you that are advocating discharging your battery, try learning the facts first. You must be thinking of nmh or nicad batteries, because discharging a lithium battery (ion or polymer) is the worst thing you can do with it. Look here:

    Charging

Lithium-Ion cells use a microchip to maintain a very delicately balanced charge rate. If you have any reason to believe that the battery has sustained shock or damage that could in any way affect the circuitry you should dispose of the battery immediately.
If the circuitry is not working correctly to maintain the charge level the cell may explode.

Lithium-Ion battery's prefer incremental (top-up) charges rather than complete discharges preferred by other battery technologies. We recommend that you fully discharge the battery as little as possible. No more than one fast discharge / charge every year is recommended. For all other general use incremental charging should be applied with power levels not being allowed to fall below 20% of capacity.

Priming (Performing a slow charge, followed by several fast charge / discharge's) Li cells after prolonged storage is not necessarily required. As Lithium-Ion best practice dictates you should not fully discharge Li cells regularly, repeated use of priming should be avoided.

And no, black pixels do not use less power - that's just silly (unless your device has an OLED display, in which case it is once again true). The backlight is not per-pixel, it is the entire screen.

Really, when people give advice on a forum, they should check their facts first! When I saw the posts recommending discharging your battery I almost choked at the irony. That will eventually result in exactly the opposite of what the intent was - more battery life - but will be permanent.

Sorry for my vehemence. I just recently bought my G1 and was impressed that the instructions don't tell you to charge the battery completely before use (a myth that for some reason has persisted for all these years - L-Ion and Li-Po batteries require a special charger to charge them for the first time and so always come pre-charged). I guess I had higher hopes for the G1 community based on the packaging - not very realistic. I recall something about a book and a cover...

Bravo John, I was going to say the same thing! Sometimes technology changes and people don't keep up with how the new stuff works!

The Backlight Off app is saving me a considerable amount of battery, if no one has mentioned that yet.

    Brightness - lowest
    3g - Off
    Wifi - off
    Bluetooth - Off
    Gps - off
    Screen timeout - shortest
I keep my gmail/calendar sync on, but if that was off, would probably help more.
