Question Unlocked G1 does it need to be activated in order to work properly?

    Hi

I just got an unlocked G1 off eBay. But is it true that the phone needs to be activated in order to run properly? I don't have a tmobile simcard needed to activate it. I'm from Denmark and have a dataplan (GPRS, EDGE and 3G). Now will the phone and Google Gmail and Calendars etc. work with my carrier or does it have to be T-Mobile only? I'm worried since T-Mobile doesn't operate in Denmark What should I do? Would it work if I know the APN addresses etc?

from what i'm reading, you do have to a have a t-mobile sim card in order to activate the phone through the gmail sync... i could be wrong, as most of what i've read aren't from reliable sources

Question Re: Unlocked G1 does it need to be activated in order to work properly?

Does this also apply to officially unlocked G1's?? The guy who sold it to me told me it will be unlocked and come with instructions howto unlock it (with code from t-mobile). But sadly I don't have a T-Mobile SIM-card. Can I just buy one on eBay (eg prepaid) and start using it also if I live in Denmark?

From what I know, the only thing that will not work would be the 3G,

"If" the phone is unlocked it should work w/ other "GSM" providers running on GSM network "GPRS/EDGE" 850/900/1800/1900 MHz (Band frequency)

    Yeha

But would the Google gmail calendar and contact sync work on the unlocked g1 if I have a dataplan with my current carrier?

sure it will, like I've said your'll be running on GPRS/EDGE speed

3G speed would not work, 3G is only for T-Mobile...

but you "May" need to config. your network settings, I'm not 100% on this...

just try it, and if it doesn't work ask your provider for the right network settings

    Ok,

But I can see that G1 supports HSPA at 2100MHz, that's the as in Europe. My provider supports both HSDPA and HSPA and HSUPA (TeliaSonera). So what does the "activation" of the phone do? If it's been officially unlocked, it doesn't need to be activated? If it needs to, why? If I have the unlocked version, the GM stuff should work. But if I only have a G1 not activated and not unlocked (just like one without any contract) GM stuff wouldn't work? Or... if I had it activated with a friends T-Mobile SIM but not unlocked, GM stuff wouldn't work?

So, unlocked means it's activated and just "free" to use?

I've been told by HTC Hong Kong that 3G should work here in Australia as Optus my provider supports 2100mhz so I'm considering buying an unlocked phone from eBay too.

You cannot use the phone without activating it, to do that you need to get online, to get online you need to use a TMobile account. In order to use your carrier's internet, you'll have to manually enter the network settings...but you can't access that option without activating the G1.
