    yeah the green light should flash for any notifications I believe, it flashed earlier for my voicemail.

    It's not consistent. A few times I've had new email that showed no notification light. Also, I notice that it doesn't seem to turn green when I'm charging it, either.

    I think I may have found the bug: I sent a few test messages, and I only get the notification light when I don't have the Gmail app open on the G1, even if it's sleeping. When I hit the "end" key and still have Gmail open, no green light for new mail.

    hmmmmmmm, I see what the problem is, the green light is flashing when you have new notifications?

    it would be awesome if the trackball lit

    It is true that if you have the application open that you want a notification for, you wont get one because the phone assumes you are using the application and will see the new message. So if you want a notification, close out of the ap using the home or back button.

    The only applications I have noticed a lack of notification from the light on the phone, or sound/vibrate, are IM applications. To me these applications only notify me if I do as you say, and wake the phone up.
