The Google voice application seemed to be slowing down so I removed it. I now receive SMS and voicemail alerts through Gmail (this provides near instantaneous alerts whereas the Google Voice app could only check in 5 minute intervals and consumed phone resources in the process).
When a Google Voice email comes I have it labeled "SMS." I was hoping to archive these messages so they would not be confused with my emails but Android WONT NOTIFY YOU ABOUT UNREAD EMAILS THAT ARE NOT IN UR INBOX
That is,
I Sync the SMS Folder and it shows unread messages in the SMS label but I cannot be alerted about these in the NOTIFIcation pane.
I think custom label notifications would (a) be a cleaner way of integrating Google Voice (since u can literally reply to SMS in GMAIL, and add shortcuts to Gmail labels on your home screen), and (b) have many other applications ALL without consuming very many resources
:-P
To me this is a way of integrating Push notifications without consuming a lot of resources

I swear I was going to post this EXACT same thing. My Google Voice app has been acting funny, and sometimes it doesn't notify me AT ALL. I also switched to recieving my text messages via Gmail.....and yes it is soooooo much faster. I also like how you can reply to the text message right there in gmail like you are texting back. I alos made an SMS lable and have all my GV text messages going there. I even set a shortcut on my G1 desktop to my SMS label so I can check those byitself.
Notifications for certain labels would REALLY help in this situation.

Until that enhancement materializes, like you, I label my GV SMS. But I have gmail configured to label but place in inbox. Once I see it, it's easy to just tap "archive" to get it properly filed. End result: prompt notifications without futzing organization.
