Not sure what frequency most garage doors run off of (infrared or what?) but that would help especially for something like my parent's house. So I don't have to keep up with one of their openers.
The current garage door opener market uses a frequency spectrum range between 300-400 MHz and most of the transmitter/receivers rely on hopping or rolling code technology. This approach prevents perpetrators from recording a code and replaying it to open a garage door. Since the signal is supposed to be significantly different from that of any other garage door remote control, manufacturers claim it is impossible for someone other than the owner of the remote to open the garage. When the transmitter sends a code, it generates a new code using an encoder. The receiver, after receiving a correct code, uses the same encoder with the same original seed to generate a new code that it will accept in the future. Because there is a high probability that someone might accidentally push the open button while not in range and desynchronize the code, the transmitter and receiver generate look-a-head codes ahead of time.

short answer is no, the g1 does not have the right technolgy inside it to do so, unless you rigged it to wifi or bluetooth somehow

maybe in the future then, most likely they would actually have to change the garage door technology first, to be adaptable to the phones. Although I would imagine that phones have a higher security than garage doors. regardless thanks for the reply!

Vincent started a thread a while back asking what apps we would like to see. Garage Door Opener app was on I threw out there. Good idea.
yeah anything that currently requires another device for one purpose should be incorporated in my opinion. keyless entry, garage door, lazer pointer, projector you know all that stuff
on a side note i do not advocate the use of lazer pointers especially at concerts; although I did find it humorous to watch a guy try and compete with radiohead's light show with one at a show I went to a couple of months ago.
What about TV remote then......
part joke, part I've never understood why people feel the need to point red dots on the musicians they paid to see.
most smartphones i have used do not have the right class of infrared to use them effectively as a tv remote... regardless, it can be done (the g1 does not have infrared so no on the g1) but just doesn't work that great... typically have to be 6 feet away or less from the tv in order to catch the signal
