    Default Room measuring app idea

I've been thinking about writing an app to help you figure out far far it is to to some wall (say you are measuring a room. Stand at one wall and and you want to know how far it is to the opposite wall). You throw your G1 at the wall and it measures how hard you threw it and times how long it took to hit the wall. What do you think? Anyone want to be a beta tester?

Didn't one of the google execs say they wrote a program to time how long the g1 is in the air after tossing it? Where's that app?

well i actually had a similar idea, i was thinking more of like using the GPS to help you measure square footage of buildings/homes, i work in commercial real estate and figure this would be a great tool to use to do walkarounds and just another tool to quickly figure out the Square Footage of places

I would imagine this to be inaccurate to some degree

No dice using the accelerometer. But I have seen a similar app running on a Dell Axim. It emitted a tone from the speaker and measured the time for the echo to be detected in the microphone. A co-worker has it on his Axim and we've played around with it a bunch in the office. It actually works remarkably well. I guess it ought to be as accurate as one of those inexpensive sonic tape measures. Works pretty well in smaller rooms.

I've also seen an app like this that ran on my old PalmOS Garmin iQue3600. You could walk around the periphery of your property and it would calculate the acreage from the GPS trace. It also worked very well.

How about using the camera to see from wall to wall. like a range finder. i thought someone was working on something like that. not sure. might be a little work.... but from the words of the little boy in "Angles in the Outfield" "It could happen!"

It is similar in concept to the app I'm writing. My app is tentatively titled, gMergency Brake. It helps when you have to park your vehicle on a hill that is too steep for the vehicle's emergency brake to sufficiently negotiate with gravity. As you're applying the parking brake, you remove your eyes from the road and hands from the steering wheel to engage your G1 (or other android enabled device) firing open gMergency Brake. As the app launches, you sling your gMergency Cable (sold separately) out the driver's side window. gMergency Brake leaps into action detecting where it is in respect to the front driver's side tire (utilizing aGPS and the accelerometer) and seamlessly guides itself into place on the ground before said tire. At that point, the gMergency Holographic Inhibitor springs forth from the Android display causing the vehicle to stop AND hold its position resting against the G1 (or other Android enabled device) ever so gently avoiding damage to the unit, but with the power of 17 Marvel Hulks (trademark, not to be used without permission of Ricky Bobby Inc.) to ensure that your vehicle doesn't roll.

I plan to roll the alpha version out in time for Christmas. Any takers?

I was beginning to wonder if anyone knew I was joking.

That was seriously funny and original and had me laughing out loud. The people in my office are looking at me now. Thanks.

does the accelerometer only measure motion? or can it measure speed and velocity?

if it can, you can start from one wall walk to the other end and it can measure the distance.
