Hi,
I'm wondering if it's possible to make an app that would use the screen as a scale in grams with .01gram precision (possibly up to 100+ grams) with some sort of tare and calibration features.
Is this sort of program possible?
Hey, this has been asked at least once before, and the answer is no.
The screen measures the flow of electrons through a film, not weight, to know when it's touched. It's possible on some to trigger a response without even touching the screen.
I forgot to finish what I was saying -- there is no way to weigh with the screen.
I could see where this application would come in handy, but it's simply not possible. You should check ebay for scales.

Yep, asked once before. I think the responses to it where something like "nope, you'll have to still drag a scale around for your drugs".
But it would be cool if someone used the phone features to make a measurment program ... like move the phone 3 inches, and it tells you that you moved 3 inches. Then again I'm unsure if thats possible.
Depends on the length you're measuring. The problem is, "the measurement is only as accurate as the measuring device," and even using both GPS and the accelerometer combined, it would be pretty innaccurate for a measurement that small.
Now, if the camera had flash and the phone could be laid on the face of the camera with the camera still having enough light to record images, you could theoretically use it similar to how a optical mice works. Even then, it wouldn't be very accurate.
Im hoping someone develops this on the Android, but it is possible to make a semi accurate scale using the accelerometer

This is an app Apple would never let into their Market since it is clearly intended for weighing weed. You balance the phone and calibrate it using a nickel or what have you. Clever idea and probably SOMEWHAT accurate
