Default Use G1 as a teathered WebCam

    Idea:

Basically using the camera feature of the G1 as a Webcam feed just like any other commercial webcam. Options such as feeding from usb tether (to increase response time) or fed via wireless to a client/server type arrangement.

Thanks for reading, anyone feel free to express thier need for this idea and any other ideas that they think of as I'd love for this to be put in production!!

Sounds like a great idea, though I know nothing of android development so I don't know how it would be done. Would be great to integrate with SKYPE

Definitely a good idea. Did a quick google search and found an application that does it via bluetooth for Nokia. Being able to stream it over a network could have it's own advantages as well.

Yeah, the N95 does it as well as the other nokia phones. It'd sell if someone made it and placed it on the market.

Thanks for the support (and grammar errors lol!).

If anyone can forward this topic to devs I'd be very glad of your support and theirs of course.

Thing is, we already have a camera and a camcorder feature so the feed is there. Just need a way of directing this to the computer either tethered or wireless.

Actually this would be very very easy to impliment. Just not in the way that possibly your thinking. There is already a way to take a picture through ADB. Set this up with a timer or a loop/sleep batch script to dump the images to a directory on a locally running servers htdocs, look up webcam over IP, where this just pulls jpegs from a directory and simulates a webcam. There you go.

if you really wanted this to be wireless, set up a terminal sh script that does roughly the same thing, dyndns the ip of the phone, ftp in, and pull the jpegs that way
it will be slow as all get out though

We are working on an android app for this.

Currently it works only via USB (tethered) and can be used with Skype and a few other Windows applications. Of course the main motivation is to be able to save the expense and waste of having a separate USB webcam/microphone, for those of us with desktops or laptops without built-in cameras. If there is more interest we will develop it further.

It's being posted over the next few days here and on Android market:
