Getting the Cliq?

okay so i have been debating lately about getting the cliq. except stupid t-mobile requires a data plan which i find very very stupid to get since i don't want to pay basically $400 a year just to keep a phone. i hear that i have to get a data plan to activate the phone because of the partnership with google. however i have no need for the data plan since i am constantly in range of wifi almost 24/7. so some questions to ask

1. is there a way to get the phone without getting the data plan?
2. if i get the data plan when i upgrade and then cancel will i be charged? (early termination/activation charges?)
3. will the phone work fine still without the data plan? (i.e. sms, mms, downloading apps from the market)
4. I won't be charged for like downloading apps and using the internet using wifi right? they won't count that as data?

haha sorry i sound so much like a new person on this but i am still learning these things. all your help appreciated thanks!

1.yes, just tell em u dont want it, long as u have a network connection u can use it. if push come to shove, add it, activate the phone then cancel it.
2.nope, only if u cancel the entire line of service.
3.yes, u cant use the market unless u connect through wifi first and u need a goole/gmail account.
4.no, unless u chose to buy an app then there will be step after u select buy. no

I have a cliq and I love it, I really underestimated this phone in the past it is awesome.

so has any current/recent t-mobile usa users tried doing this?

can i upgrade my phone at the discount price and then when i get home after they activate my phone cancel the data plan online immediately and not get charged? or is there like a contract that says i cannot cancel the data plan for a certain time. tell of your experiences please!!!!

oh and for like the social networking and all that. so if i don't have a data plan it won't go over the edge/3g network and charge me will it or will it not update and do all that at all?

not really sure, i put a friends sim n my cliq and she doesnt have a data plan. 3G was fully functioning and everything else, this was a tmobile sim.

Has anyone actually gotten the Cliq without the T-Mobile USA data plan? I see directives tossed around, and they all make sense. But can anyone confirm that it works?

My daughter wants a Cliq, and I would like to get it for her. But I'm not willing to shell out the samolians to pay the data charges.
