Yes, the OTA updates go out to random "groups" of phones so that their servers don't get bogged down by every user all at once trying to download the update.
Hey folks.I'm running an HTC Magic (NTT Docomo in Japan) and I still am using Android 1.5. A friend of mine who has the same phone got a notice to update his phone to 1.6 at the end of last week, but I've yet to get a notice. And when I go into Settings->Phone info->System Update, I get a message saying that my system is up to date. Yet it doesn't seem like it actually checks (i.e. I don't see the little circle pop up indicating that the phone is working). So, do these 1.6 updates happen over a period of time, and I should be getting one eventually? Or is there some setting that I need to check in order for my phone to update? Thanks for your help.

That's good to know. Thanks.

You're right about the "Check for updates" link. It doesn't actually check anything other than a flag that is already set in the phone.
It works like this...
Every so often (every time you boot up your phone, or every 24 hours, or every time you enter a special code) the Checkin service runs. When this runs, it checks for updates for all of your apps and updates for Android.
If there are updates for your apps, you'll see a notification which you've probably seen before.
If there are updates for Android, it'll save this information and (I think) display a popup saying there is an update (Donut).
If you cancel the update, or if it has not displayed the popup yet, and if the Checkin service has found an update and saved this fact, THEN if you hit the Check for updates link it'll tell you there is an update.
That special code... if you dial *#*#CHECKIN#*#* (that's *#*#2432546#*#*) then the number will disappear when you hit the final *, and a few seconds later you'll get a notification saying "Checkin successful" or something similar.
You can't really speed up getting an OTA update. Some people get their update 2 weeks or so after the first people on that network provider start getting it. It's just the way it is.
any word on when sprint's hero will get it?
I'm also on docomo in Japan and I got the update last Friday. Notification just popped up in the morning. I wonder if the op got it yet?
People I know got their Donuts a month ago! Talks about the Eclair coming out soon are making the wait for my Donut OTA even more unbearable.![]()
Chris25 - I noticed in another thread you mentioned you called your provider who said they don't support Android. If what they say is true then you will never get any updates over the air because your provider has to push the update out to you, so if they don't support Android they'll never push it out to you.
You will have to upgrade to Donut manually. There are a lot of threads on here that explain how to do it. It's just a case of finding the correct download for your phone.
