Google has just launched a SIM and Hardware unlocked Developer phone called the Android Dev Phone 1. Developers can get it from Google's website for $399

That's great for all those iPhoners who wanted the G1 but just couldn't bring themselves to part with AT&T. But for $400?
IDK, I guess it's worth it. I mean, otherwise you have to have someone (relative?) willing to be on t-mobile to get the $200 G1 and then hope it's unlockable. but then you don't get the ability to reflash it...
However, this is good news... people (devs) start flashing their own versions of Android, eventually it will trickle down to the consumer. We'll get versions of Android better than Google's, with different (better) features, etc. But here's the question: How will you get the dev's version of android onto a non-dev phone?

impressed me!
The phone isn't carrier locked I would think![]()
Are there any specs on the phone?
Is it exactly the same as the G1?
Can it use AT&T's 3G service?
that phone looks so good.
i just want the back cover.. i hope someone will sell it.. ;D
THe specs on the phone are the same as the G1. THe phone is simply completely open so that developers can use it to sets out their apps and port their own renditions of Android into it. They will be shipping this phone overseas as well, but there's no indication that they have added any additional GSM bands so I don't think it will work on At&t's 3G network.
It will be interesting to me to see what the difference are between the base installations on the phones. I've seen several people mention that all the apps that this phone has, like the mail apps, etc., are T-Mobile specific, and not really part of the OS. I don't really buy that, considering the phone obviously has to have a gMail app, being tied to your google account and all. --But if, like some have said, the gMail client is T-Mobile G1 specific, what will the dev phone have? Obviously, it shouldn't have MyFaves on it. What else? Could market be missing? Surely not. --But it's not on the SDK/emulator version, and no one has figured out how/where to get it. This dev phone should provide a real insight into how much (or, as I suspect, how little/none) of what's installed on our phones is specific to T-Mobile.

The Gmail app is not T-Mo specific. I have been using my G1 for over a month now, and the only apps that are T-Mo specific are the WLM/AIM/YM services in the IM client, and the MyFavs app (which does not even show up). I'm on an unlocked HTC G1
