Default Any way to keep "non-music" MP3s out of the Music Library?

I just got a free HTC Magic at the Google I/O conference and am liking it so far. I'm trying to set it up as a day-to-day replacement for my iPod, and right now I'm using BeyondPod for podcasts and have tried several different music players.

My plan was to keep the two separate - Podcast software for podcasts and a music player for music.

There's just one problem that is driving me nuts: I can't figure out how to keep "non-music" MP3s (namely, podcasts) out of the music library. The music players all seem to scan for every audio file on my SD card, and can't be forced to use just the Music folder. So I end up with a music library littered with podcasts.

I'd put them in separate playlists, but the files are constantly changing, and it wouldn't be worth trying to keep up with them.

Am I missing something? I've googled the heck out of this and can't seem to find anyone else who's bothered by this. Is there any way to have a music player only play files from a certain folder?

HideNSeek is an app that will allow you to hide files and such...

or you can put a "." in front of the folder with all your podcasts in there

I've been trying for a while now to find a way to keep ringtones in an isolated folder and still have access to them when changing tones and notifications, haven't run across any that work for me. The "."hides them, but I can't select them in any way.

    In this thread:

    http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f...ide-some-9017/

I learned that putting a file named ".nomedia" in a folder will hide its contents (including all subfolders) from an Android system app such as the media player. This worked like a charm for me, since my podcast player is a 3rd-party app, and continues to see its files with no problems.

If you're trying to hide ringtones, this method may have the unintended consequence of hiding the files from your phone. Not sure.

Yeah, I tried that, you can't see your ringtones.

update to the latest beta, hiding podcasts has been added as an option.

    Here is what is new:
    * Added a setting that can be used to hide BeyondPod podcasts
from the built In Android Media Player. The setting is called "Share
Podcasts" in the "General Settings" section.
    * Downloaded icons are also now excluded by default from being
visible in the Android Gallery (picture viewer) application.
    * Fixed a crash caused by recycling of bitmaps during the low
    memory conditions
    * Fixed a bug where the player will not always correctly start
playing the Next Podcast when using stereo Bluetooth connection
You can download the latest build from: http://www.beyondpod.mobi/android/BETA
