I remember Vincent had a conference call with google last week, but nothing was heard since. Yeah it has to be official, but when?

Yes - I'm interested to hear as well. I'm sure Vincent will post a new thread once he has the go ahead from Google. Hopefully he got some feedback on what there priorities are and some timelines.
Speaking of that - here's the link to the roadmap from Android Open Source for projected code updates - virtual keyboard will be Q1 of 2009...
http://source.android.com/roadmap
Needs an actual firmware upgrade. Visual enhancements, battery life, new gadgets, fixed kinks, leakage, easier to view/navigate files/folders, virtual keyboard, easier to access settings, being able to save/forward MMS picture messages, video recorder, accelerometer automatically not just for web browsing (should be able to use accelerometer in every app/ all should be able to use it without opening the keyboard), and more... lists goes on. Firmware problems first.
