Can G1 phone work without a data plan sim card

Can G1 phone work without a data plan sim card?
And if I have WiFi at home, can G1 connect to internet via my home's WiFi network ?

You mean without a data plan. It should, but you need a data plan to activate the phone. I've heard there is a way to activate the phone thru wifi. Go ahead and search around for it. But you really should get a data plan. The internet services are what make this phone great.

To my knowledge, yeah. You just can't use data on the go.

Yes it will work whereever you have Wifi. Just not when you don't have any wifi.

Just use someone elses simcard that has a data plan to activate the phone and you'll be great from there on.

Hey what about texting? I hear with the new cupcake update if you dont have a data plan you cant receive/send text msgs... Is this true? Im looking to switch from my blackberry pearl and get a g1 but if i cant send/receive text msgs with a g1 without a data plan why bother...
