Will this be able to happen out of the box or is this a later firmware update?

This is correct
The G1 User Manual page 64 states:
"When your keyboard is open, Web pages will always display using landscape orientation. However, when your keyboard is closed, you can change orientation by pressing MENU and selecting Flip orientation. The orientation will "stick" until you explicitly change it".

I am sure there will be an App covering this thing - once you flip the phone into landscape position it changes the screen automatically like iPhone... its the matter of days after the phone reaches our mailboxes

Yeah, it's really weird. I wonder if they left those features out intentionally just to try to avoid the "look at them ripping off Apple? comments? It's really a tough situation, because you know if they had done it, haters would be all over it for being a ripoff. But since they didn't, haters will be all over it claiming it's not even good enough to do it anyway. Lose-lose for Google.
I do know when I'[m shoing it off to my iphone toting friends, they're going to look down on the fact that I have to go into menus to change that if I don't want to use the keyboard.

I could have SWORN there was a video from the 23rd showing one of the "reps", with the phone closed, going from landscape and back. Let me see if i can find that vid. I might be wrong, and according to the G1 bible i am.
