i really do hope its not a headache to copy contacts. quick question? how many email accounts will we be able to forward to the g1? i have a few gmail accounts will my contacts be pulled from each gmail account and added to the address in my g1's phone book OR will i only be able to pull up my contacts while logged into gmail?

You'll only pull contacts from the main gmail account. For other gmail accounts, you can set them up as a pop3 email account.
is there a way to copy the contacts straight from the tmo wing ( doing a backup of contacts or PIM info) and then transfer it to the pc and then import to gmail ??

You can theoretically sync your Wing with Outlook, then open Outlook and go to File > Import/Export > Export to CSV file and then import that file to Google. However, it seems like it's hit-or-miss.
I didn't have luck with it. My suggestion would be to do what MrGibbage suggested above.
see the part thats messing me up is that im using mail2web, and the computer that im using doesnt have outlook installed on it - wtf !!!
but I did get thunderbird for ppc and ran it on my wing and exported the .csv file, tried to import it into gmail and the only thing it saved was the name, so now i have to edit the csv file so it will work and get the format right

What you can do is export a csv from gmail, and another from your email client. Then just copy the proper fields into the google one.

Interesting that on my first day here, I run into this problem and this thread talking about it.
Also interesting, on a project I am working for for a current client, I just today wrote an app for importing contacts from Outlook into my clients web app. When I got home, I tried getting my contacts synched up with Google and had the same problems others are reporting.
I looked at the code I had just written earlier in the day, and with a few tweaks, I've got a decent solution for getting outlook contacts into Gmail. Essentially, you export your Outlook contacts to an Excel 97-2003 format, load it up and it will spit out the contacts in a Google-friendly format. I dont think it would be hard to automate it.
For the people having issues with the name and address fields with Outlook CSV files: Have you tried using the "old" version of GMail? On the top right of GMail, click "Older Version" and import from there. Seems like the newer version is wonky right now. Everything seems to import fine on the older version though...
