Have ROMs running the sense UI been optimized to run better on the G1? I read that it runs slow on the G1 due to lower ram. I have been thinking about rooting my phone, mostly just to tinker with it. The process of rooting I can handle. I'm just confused on the different ROMs out there. I am looking for stability, stability, stability, and a few extra features thrown in if possible. I don't want any broken features, I seen ROMs listing broken features. I would like to try out a Hero ROM if there is a stable and smooth running version out there. If I'm not happy with any MODed ROMs can I run the official 1.5 ROM and still keep root? I've read a lot, there is just so much info, spread out so much I'm getting a headache.
Yes you can go back and forth between different ROMs. I was just using the JacHero 2.4 rom for a while but I found it crashed way too much to be reliable and it was horribly slow if you're not using apps2sd. I went ahead and flashed back to the JF ADP 1.51 rom for now.
I'm probably going to go ahead and pick up a TP2 in August but the G1 running JF or cyanogen's (from what I hear) roms are very stable and quite responsive. You can install the Hero theme ontop of those as long as you are not using JF 1.51 US..it has to be ADP or UK versions.
Oh..and as a reminder...PLEASE REMEMBER TO ALWAYS FLASH THE RADIO FIRST, SPL SECOND, THEN WIPE AND INSTALL THE ROM.
Flashing out of order could result in a soft brick of your G1. It can easily be fixed if you have a mutli media card reader. If you have any questions, don't hesistant to ask. I'm a noob when it comes to flashing but it wasn't as hard as I thought.

Does the theme actually work like the hero UI? I have a hero theme for openhome, but it just sorta looks like it but works just like anything else. The sweater home version is closer but not perfect. And what about root and the current official build?
Well I'm rooted using the latest cyanogen ROM. But I read in the release notes it says that CPU scaling is increased. I read that it can cause problems to scale the CPU on this thing to its native speeds. Is this a problem with this ROM?
The problem I read was, frying the board or cpu some how. Something along those lines. I don't want a phone bricked due to hardware failure. Still would like to know some opinions on the better ROMs to use. I tried looking the chart over but the thing is so large I can't follow it very easy on this tiny 10" screen.
@ Everyone before this post.
- Haykuro's SPL is required and only works on PVT boards (you can check this by turning off your phone then holding power and the camera button, which will boot you up into the SPL.) If you have a DVT, or anything other than PVT, then you're out of luck. Flashing the radio, then SPL only needs to be done ONCE. However, wiping and updating new roms can be done to your hearts content.
- Cpu scaling is increased in cyanogen's roms to 528mHz. However, in the hero roms, it tends to run better at 384mHz with these commands appended to init.rc found in /system.
- Currently Bluetooth (Even I've tried to fix) and the LED have not been able to function, YET.Code:write /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/ondemand/up_threshold 40 write /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/ondemand/ignore_nice_load 1 write /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/ondemand/sampling_rate 200000
- Any hero theme that replaces the default stock android theme is not the same as the actual hero sense ui. It may mimic status bar icons, system colors, and what not, but the TouchFLO experience is not there.
- I've been running my G1 at 528mHz for i'd say about 6 or so months, no hardware failure. The stock G1 arrived to us actually under clocked, so clocking it to its rated max speed doesn't hurt it, and doesn't adversely affect battery life.

Good to know that no problems will occur. Is the cpu always running at max, or is it scaled? To bad about the themes, the touchflo is what I want to try out. Need to find a good stable ROM I like.
Generally its scaled (528 to 384 in cyanogen's) or (384 to 245 in the hero builds). Themes will generally break some of the functionality of the builds because you are overwriting any files that the original developer may have modified.

Well in that case, if themes break functions unless build/ROM specific if that even matters, I might keep using open home. I never had issues with it being slow in its latest version.
