Then you don't get it OTA like normally. You would wait until the awesome hackers can get their hands on it and get root and then you would install it manually.

One thing that concerns me about getting root on my phone is that I believe it will void my warranty. Yes I know, if you have to send it back for replacement, restore it to OEM condition first, but that might be a pain to accomplish, particularly if that were to happen months down the road after another update or two.

I also have the extened warranty. So what if my G1 dies, or gets broken, and I can't restore it to OEM condition before returning it? I presume if they discover I have rooted the phone, they would void the warranty and therefore not issue me a replacement phone.

You know insurance companies are always looking for a way out of having to pay.

I don't know if it would void the warranty. It's an open source platform...plus usually your warranty voids if you mess with the internals. This is all software.

My experience with warranty replacement of stuff like this is that the company doesn't really care how it got broken. They aren't going to repair yours and send it back...they'll drop ship you a new or refurbed one.

All they are going to do is open up the box to the broken one and verify that you didn't ship them a block of wood, or that you obviously took a hammer to it. If it just doesn't work or won't turn on, or the screen is cracked, or anything else, they are just going to toss it in a bin and tell their system to ship you a new one pronto.

I agree. I really don't think they have the time or inclination to look very carefully at the firmware version, what's loaded on the phone, etc.
