    Default Quick question...

I am eligible for an upgrade, but I was wondering that if I get the G1 for the full price (no contract), am I still required to get the G1 data plan to make the phone work? I remember using the 2G network with my previous G1 (before I returned it) and didn't really find it to be that much slower than the 3G.

The reason why I ask is because it would be more beneficial to invest the $200+ more now and save the $840 I'd be paying for the data plan over the 2 years.

    Yes.

Without data plan, there would be no data. Hence data.

Please don't post when you can't read or don't know what you're talking about. Thank you!

In case you don't know, EDGE is also data genius!

People can be so cruel over the internet...

It'd be on a pay per use basis. If you got the data plan, its a flat rate per month, verses being slapped in the face with a ridiculous phone bill because you used 1.5 gb of data at a rate of $ 0.01/kb.

Well, I used to have the T-Zones Proxy hack with my Dash where I was only paying $5.99/mo for unlimited EDGE data. I heard and saw that this is also possible with the G1.

Guess that's what I'm going to be doing.

    Thanks!

So not only did you have a plan and solution to the problem you posed, you disregarded the help you got? Strange.

Ummm...you could use the WiFi function without a plan.

I would suggest buygin the phone at the discount with a data plan and then dumping the data plan after month one and keeping the phone for wifi only....

That is if you want a 2 year contract with T-Mo again and could handle only using WiFi.

Edge or 3G use as you go will kill you in price.

So you can dump the data plan after a month? If that's the case, I'm definetely doing it. I just don't want to be forced to spend $420 a year on a phone. As long as I have emails and a browser, that's is all I need. And the $5.99 T-Zones plan gives me that.
