running JF 1.5- want to get to Cynogen latest

here , how to update to the latest cyanogen if you arent on a recent cyan rom . this applies to jf also . you have to install cyanogens recovery 1.4 or amen ras recovery v1.2.3 first , if you havent already....

Also, does your SD card need to be partitioned to run the latest cyanogen? i know it has apps2sd in it, but do i have to use that?

amen ras recovery has more options on the menu . so you dont have to type everything out manually . it will partition your sd card with one button ! and yes , you need to have your sd card partitioned for apps2sd to happen automatically .

Yes it will work without a partition, you just won't have apps2sd.

Keep in mind if you don't partition you will only have space for maybe 50 apps on your phone....probably less.

Go ahead and do Cyanogen's pimped out recovery image, or one of the others. Start with that small step.

There used to be a simple, one-step, upgrade.zip path to get you to the latest Cyanogen ROM without having to go through the multi-step process. It was basically what Cyanogen was doing prior to the C&D letter from Google. Looks as though it may have been removed from XDA though.

Like everyone said, you want to have your sd card partitioned to run apps2sd, because if you don't your not tapping into the full potential of cyan's roms. The automatic apps2sd makes the rom and phone fly. I have his 1.4 recovery, but everyone says Amon-ra's recovery has more options and easier to use. But its really up to the user.

Put the amon_ra recovery image inside the root directory of your sd card (no subfolders)

boot up into your jf rom, go into terminal emulator, type in command:
su

if a super user permissions request pops up, select always allow, type in:
flash_image recovery /sdcard/[filename].img

wait for the flashing to finish (you'll know when the # sign appears again)

now type in:
reboot recovery

your phone should now reboot into the amon_ra recovery.

The next step in the procedure is to repartition your g1’s internal phone memory. To give a bit of background on this procedure…you should know that normally when you have an unrooted g1, tmobile is able to give you over the air (OTA) updates to your phone. By having a rooted phone, you no longer can receive these updates. However, there is a partition on the g1 designed specifically to house these update files when they are transferred OTA. Now that you have a rooted phone, you will not be receiving these updates any longer but that partition still exists and will not be used. By partitioning your phone’s internal memory, we can convert that partition and use it for other applications or system storage.

To partition your internal phone memory you will need the Haykuro spl and the accompanying radio img.

If these files are not already in the root folder of your sd card , place them in there now.

First, flash the Radio image. Go into recovery, and select (select by pressing down on the trackball-touch screen functions will not work in recovery)


“apply sdcard:choose zip”


This will now send you to the root directory of your sdcard folder and will let you choose which .zip files you would like to flash


Select the radio file (ota-radio-2_22_19_26I) and press the trackball, a prompt will appear asking if you would like to confirm the flash, press the “home” button to begin flashing the radio. After the radio is flashed, it will tell you to reboot your phone, to reboot, hold the “home” key and “back” key, at the same time, and let go.


Your phone will continue to install the radio, and reboot once again into recovery. Now that you are in recovery, you may flash the SPL (secondary program loader). Select the spl (spl-signed) as you would the radio, and flash it in a similar fashion.


Once the spl has been successfully installed you may now begin to partition the sd card.

The RA-recovery image has prebuilt menu settings to partition your sd card for you. (500mb Ext 2/32 mb linux swap/ and the rest FAT32)


To partitions your sd card with this configuration, just select the option (part sd:fat32+fat32+swap), and press down on the track ball, confirm by pressing the “home” key.


Wait till partitioning is completed. In this configuration your EXT partition will be an Ext2 partition. Ext2 partitions have been around for a long time and are the most stable of partitions. However ext 3 partitions are faster, and newer, are not AS stable, but they too have been around for a long enough time to be deemed “stable” chances are , you will never have a problem with either partition. (3 is recommended)


To upgrade to ext3 go to “convert ext2 to ext3” select and confirm.


Note: there are many different types of roms out there, some are based off the stock android build, and others are ported from phones such as the HTC Hero and sport the customized HTC SENSE User Interface. It’s all a matter of preference, but the best supported roms are made by Cyanogen.


To install a cyanogen rom, you first must flash the HTC Android developer phone 1 ROM. (signed-dream_devphone_userdebug-ota-14721)


Flash in a similar fashion as you did with the radio and spl BUT when it asks you to reboot, do not. Instead go back into the sd card folder and flash Cyanogen’s rom on top of the HTC rom. (ex: update-cm-4.2.3.1-signed)


Flash this ROM and afterwards when prompted to reboot, do so.


You have now successfully installed cyanogen’s ROM, while in recovery, select the reboot phone command, this will reboot your phone into the android system (as opposed to recovery)


The initial boot, may take more time than usual (this is because the system is moving and installing your applications to the sd card.)


You are done.

When updating your rom, just place the new rom file into the root folder of your sd card. And flash it (you will not need to flash the stock HTC rom like you did initially)


Note: after updating your rom, to ensure stability, you will need to run the fix_permissions script. This script is built into the RA recovery image and can be selected in the menu by using the “fix apk uid mismatches” feature. Select and confirm. Reboot afterwards to complete.



If you’re not satisfied with the stock ROM look, there are several “themes” that you can flash on top of these roms. These themes can be found at

there are specific themes built for specific roms, find the theme that works for your rom.


To flash a theme, flash in a similar fashion as you would a rom, and reboot. The initial boot may take longer than usual because the theme is transferring its images and icons into the stock build. Once booted, power off your phone and run the “fix apk uid mismatches” feature in recovery to ensure stability once more.
