At least forum members should know now and know to change the APN settings before travel to fully guarantee no data usage. T-mobile should have made this clear when opening your international calling & text plan.
This wasn't documented anywhere, want to confirm with others... Whichever APN has the words "default" in the "APN Type" field is what the phone uses, correct? Anyone else willing to confirm that. I notice if I change the APN name for the Access Point that has "default" in it that the connection won't happen for data. Didn't see what happens when I change the SIM if it follows to the other AP for that SIM automatically. What are others noticing with multiple country SIM's or network SIM's?

My G1 is unlocked, so I am using a local SIM card in Mozambique. The data service works well, but it is a prepaid SIM (like the majority in Africa). The only way to prevent the constant draining of my prepaid funds, I had to switch the phone to airline mode, which leaves it working well as a music device, but not much else. I had to switch to my old T-Mobile Dash because I can control how and when it accesses the Internet.

If Android is really poised to become the most pervasive Smartphone OS, they will need to make it possible to enable and disable the Internet connectivity independently of the telephone function.
