Have it unlocked, if your phone company supplies you with the code
Then you can use a pre paid sim card while you're over here
hi guys
well next year in February i will be popping over to the u.s for a week now i would like to take my g1 with me and have it switched on while i am there not for calls but for the odd text and i use it as a watch and use the cam on it and alarm and stuff also just like to have it incase i need to make a call or something
the problem is that i have see things online about when taking your phone out of its country you get massive bills as it just used data for the fun of it and some apps phone home each time you open them
is there anything i can do to make it so i can use my phone out of the uk or will i have to take my only n95 with me or something?

No, that wouldn't help you. You would purchase a US pre-paid SIM to use in your phone as soon as you got here or as soon as you wanted to use your G1 here. There is also a program on the market to lock the phone down to prevent it from costing you anything, but that will ban all incoming and outgoing data. There is a way to turn the radio off with an AnyCut shortcut also, which would leave you with WiFi data only.
I just purchased a pre-paid T-Mobile SIM today from a T-Mobile reseller, and it cost me $35, that includes a $20 account credit which can be used on voice, data, or SMS-MMS.
The surest way not to get charged is to remove your SIM once you're airborne in the UK and not put it back in once you touch the ground on your return!

ok thanks will look at getting a t-mobile sim when i get there or try the lockdown apps as it would b ok with just wifi and just turn app off when i want to make a phone call
also omg your pre-pay sims are so expensive in the u.s we get sent them in the post and given away all over the place for free over here
Yes, what he said ^

tbh phones are 2expensie to start with and i really hate that i have a t-mobile phone here but to use t-mobile in the uk costs me a stupid amount its not right
I have the opposite problem. I'm going to the UK in July and want to take the phone with me. What do I need to do with this? Notify T-mobile before I go? Thanks
