I'm not sure what's going on but my touch screen worked and then stopped. It is not responsive and will active items where i didn't press. Also the applications tab and home screen are "shaking".
I'm hoping this is just a hard reset and not hardware related. Anyone else have this problem?
EDIT: Just to clarify for future reference this is TMobile G1 I'm using (though next set of Android phones a way off figure i might as well add it in)

Just had to power down and pop out battery then put it back in. Worst case Tmobile said can do a hard reset.
Never heard of that problem before, but a soft reset fixes a lot of things. I should do one right now!

I have been having exactly the same problem, and I have noticed that it usually occurs immediately after plugging in the charger (happens with both the original and a third-party travel charger). The touch screen behavior becomes erratic, to the point that it may be impossible to enter the screen unlock pattern successfully. I haven't found any way to RELIABLY resolve the problem once it occurs. Rebooting the phone doesn't necessarily help. Nor does simply pulling out the charger plug. The suggested solution to pull out the battery and then do a hard reset may work, but it is way too cumbersome to use, considering the problem happens practically every time the charger is plugged in.
Sometimes, the phone just goes back to normal after some time has passed (from a few minutes to a few hours). There many be one possible way to accelerate recovery, although I haven't tried it enough times to be sure if it is actually effective or just coincidence: quickly unplug and re-insert the charger cable and then use the screen unlock gesture quickly and smoothly, repeating it several times if needed.
I am quite concerned about this problem, as it practically disables the phone at unpredictable moments and for an unpredictable amount of time. Since my life and my work often depend on the ability to communicate quickly and reliably, this is a CRITICAL issue for me. I hope there is a solution, or at least a workaround, for it, as otherwise, I'll feel that I simply can't count on this phone being there when I need it.

Just dropping a line that I have the exact same problem. It usually rsolves by itself after a couple of minutes and I have no problem using the trackpad during the time the screen is exposing this strange behaviour. However, since I use an unlock pattern, it is a real pain when the screen refuses to work normally.
If I ever find a solid solution I will post it here.
