What is does it mean to Root?

I see a lot of talk about people rooting their phone. What is that, why is it good or bad and how is it done? I also saw somebody mention that it voids the warranty? Are you physically altering the phone?

hmmm, ok so it gives you admin access to the phone. I like the idea of having the apps on my sd card as I am about out of space and I have only had the phone a few days, but it all just seems WAY over my head. Not a tech guru, just a regular guy who likes his G1. All the tether stuff is beyond me.

this about sums it up for me......

THE CURIOSITY: So about 2 weeks have gone by and you have done everything. At first it seems overwhelming because you thought you knew it all and it turns out you don’t know that much. You first inclination is to start a new thread with all of your inquiries, but slow down there newcomer! LazyGenius has put together this thread so that this whole process is a lot easier and you aren’t making threads where your only response is, “have you tried this thing called SEARCH??”

u and i both! did we miss a memo or something? maybe i didnt read the fine print so i could get all that stuff

can i get that file download and is it as easy as renaming it update.zip and flashing and ill get all those things?

I rooted my g1 and I liked it ... hope my cell carrier dont mind it!
