What phone should I get on Verizon

I know this is a pretty open ended question, but I need to re-up my Verizon wire-less contract very soon, so I will be in the market for a new phone.

I have held out for a long time on the switch to a smart phone, I still have my bomb proof LG flip phone, but it is time to put it in a antique store. HA

I have been staying away from the Iphone's because of their bundling with ATT.

The newest phone that I saw for Verizon was the Moto. Droid. Are there any other phones that are in the pipe-line, or rumored for new release that are going to make me wish I had waited?

How do upgrades and the evolution of these handsets normally progress?

Since the droid is newer can I expect for people to develop some cool tweeks to the software.

What is the "root" that I see mentioned in some of these sites?

No joke, just a smart phone hold out. I am definitely not a technophobe, I just missed the smart phone train when it started up.

yes that is what root access allows and has not yet been achieved on this new phone.
