From new out of the box, it comes with 72 mb i believe...i didn't think that amount of storage still existed. It came with a 1 GB card which i'd rather have that amount as an internal memory, i doubt it would cost any differently.
We can probably buy our own microSD card, i doubt anyone is still using the memory card that came with the phone.
Alone, the maps, browser,Gmail and some other apps on the phone cache could reach up to 20+ MB.
+ The amount of applications thats on the Market thats over 4 - 9 mb.
+ The Android Protection of the application usually adds an additional 3mb for some applications.
Unless you have root you pretty much stuck with deleting most of your applications/cache or dealing with the stupid triangle with the Exclamation mark.
Hopefully Google or HTC will be smarter about their next Android phone.
Well... as has been pointed out, getting root and moving apps to SD card still requires a large cache to be placed on the phone. I THINK what they were thinking was, this was going to be a web based phone, so massive data could be pulled off the web instead of stored on the phone. The short sightedness of this "vision" is that when you are traveling and data-roaming kicks in you are screwed. I have three Slovoed foreign language dictionaries backed up on my SD card (using Astro) that I re-install (one at a time) when needed (using Apps Installer). When I'm done, I uninstall from phone. Unlike the web based dictionaries, these are complete on the phone. So, when I use them, no data roaming. BUT, if I leave them installed, the phone throws a low memory tantrum. When they did the memory design on this phone they had to have been on crack.

the magic has more on phone storage. It has 512megs of flash vs 256megs of flash on the g1.
So 72 + 256 = 328meg.
The lack of onboard storage on the g1 isn't a huge deal because its possible to get root and then put apps on the sdcard.
also just make sure you dont fill up your phone with useless apps

I download any app that interests me. I even just download some just to have them sitting hahaha. I love it.

THE FASTEST AND EASIEST WAY TO ROOT
I used this method to root my G1 and upgrade it to the latest update RC33.
I used this method to install APPS on SD
-I downloaded Paragon Partitioner Personal Trial, it was easy for me (under 3 minutes) to make a ext2 partition and I did it all with my G1 connected via USB. I have read that this may give trouble to some people. I would suggest you do a search if you are hesitant on using Paragon.
-Yes, you have to apply the new RC33 MOD provided in the link for APPS on SD to work, it has the automated scripts.
-I did not do copy.sh data since my ext2 partition was over 2GB
I used this method since my ext2 partition was over 2GB (for caches/data to SD)
-I had trouble with the fat32 version so I did the ext2 version and it works perfect.

Does this process involve formatting the phones internal memory, or is that not requires?
Also, to create the partition, do you need to format your SD card, or can you just create a new EXT2 partition while leaving all your data on the fat32 section fine using paragon?
So dont want to have to do this, but have run out of space and it is bugging the hell out of me.
It says you should reformat your sd card. You can reformat the phone if you want.
Try looking on xDA and AC for more info.
Search how to partition etc.
