    Default You Can AIM Chat Using GTalk Client (Not SMS Based)

    If you follow the guide at this website, you will be using a 3rd party server as a "translator" (otherwise called a Transport) between GTalk and AIM. The end result is the ability to have your AIM contacts (or any other IM service like ICQ, MSN, Yahoo!, etc) on your GTalk buddy list, and when you talk to them, it looks like you are chatting from the actual AIM, Yahoo!, MSN, etc. account.

    The significance of this?

    FREE IM USING GTALK PUSH ON G1!!! (Without deducting from SMS bucket)

    Follow this guide:

    http://lifehacker.com/software/hack-...alk-289097.php

    For those security-minded people out there, this does involve saving your username and password on a 3rd party server. If you're not comfortable with this, don't do it. I'm fine with free.

    Is it confirmed that G1 will be able to open CHAT inside webmail GMAIL page or no? More likely this will be disabled (or maybe not).

    If it is able to be opened: requirement I assume wil be for me to log on into wwbmail page and then use it for free;

    If is not able to open it - there is no settings explained for GTalk app on G1 at all meaning - we still go with the official word until something is figured.

    This is correct.

    This is NOT using the Webmail client at all. This is adding a server link to your GTalk profile (stored on GTalk servers) allowing you to send messages to an e-mail address like this - aim.user@aim.aimtalk.net where aimtalk.net is the server used (transport) and aim.aimtalk.net is the entire protocol name. If I wanted to talk to someone on MSN or Yahoo!, it would be msn.user@msn.serverhere.net or yahoo.user@yahoo.serverhere.net, respectively.

    I have almost (as much as we can for now) promised myself that this will work with the G1 for this reason: I don't use the Web client for GTalk, I use iChat. When I log into my GTalk account using iChat (it communicates using the Jabber xmpp protocol), my AIM contacts are now there on my GTalk list. This is all WITHOUT giving GTalk or iChat my AIM username. Nor did I open a single web browser or GMail client window.

    For everyone to understand my methodology, please try this tutorial (save for you security-minded ones not ok with 3rd party servers). Once you log into your GTalk client (NOT the web client inside GMail), you will see your selected IM buddies automatically added onto your GTalk buddy list. AIM, Yahoo!, MSN, and GTalk buddies all on the same buddy list, inside your GTalk client.

    I know you warned us, mentioned it up front and all but, the chances of me putting my IM password on a third party server is substantially less than ZERO.

    It is a bit of a hassle, i did this when Gtalk first came out so Im good to go, but Im hoping for an app that will make it easier because the contacts can be a pain to distinct since it shows the full address including the jabber's server (xzy@msn.abcdef.com) as you contacts name/nick.

    Thanks for pretty detailed explanation - it explains more who is interested in getting into it.
    Personally, third party server and my info on it would be my concern.
    Now, I am sure if someone is using IM very often it won't be much of a hassle to go through and get free IMs

    Even beyond giving them your name and password, doing this would actually route all AIM conversations directly through an external server. What a bad idea
