I will have to play with google contacts and gmail a little more.. I just used it for another email account for youtube, and my blog for a while but never really checked all the features of gmail...
as far as adding contacts, im tired of trying to import the csv file and getting nothing but names, so i will just upload them 1 by 1, this way I can import the ones i use.

I had the same problem with importing, and found a lot of others did too. Somewhere in GoogleGroups I found a solution that worked for me. If you click the link in the top right that says 'Older Version', and then do the import, it all comes in fine. Birthdays, anniversaries, and category names (if used) all wind up in the comments field, but addresses and number go where they should. After you import, click that same link (though it will now say 'Newer Version') and you're set (hopefully).

Pics don't export/import though, you'll have to add contact pictures manually after the import.

It worked fine, just had to delete some of the BS colums that were a waste of space - Birthdays, notes, etc, changed it to the old version of google, and viola - 400 contacts loaded with no problem...
    thanks for the help

So, for you veteran gmailers, tell me--how good is their spam catching? I honestly get less than one spam a month in my inbox, and no false positives. I manage my own server though (spamassassin and procmail). I am considering moving my domain to gmail (if I hear that domains will have the same push functionality as @gmail accounts). But, I want to know that I won't see spam. I like having access to the server, and giving up that control will be difficult, but if their spam catching is as good as I've heard, then maybe I'll give them a chance.

So far, their spam catching is OK. Have been using it about a week, and it seems to be of the variety that they zap it before it reaches your junkmail folder. You are though going to get a >lot< more than 1 per month. I'm getting about 50 a day with my personal domain moved over.

Give the 30 day free Premier level a spin, you can get your MX record changed & have everything in place for when your G1 arrives. You'll also have access to emailing of tech support (not an option with the free Apps account) and you can do like I did: email tech support asking about functionality of Google Apps with the G1, to which they'll reply either a @gmail account, or a Google Apps hosted domain email address, will work idenitically with a G1

I have found their spam filters to be awesome. I never see spam in my inbox, and have never had one that shouldn't be spam accidentally identified as such.

50 spams a day!!??!?!?! Yikes! In your inbox, or is that what they are catching? If that's what they are catching, then GREAT, but if you are getting that in your inbox, then that is UNSAT.

Thanks for the feedback on the hosted domain functionality.

The spam catching is top notch IME. I never get those V14GR4 emails or any of that nonsense and i have 4 separate email address that are posted publicly on the internet which forward to my gmail acct. I get spam from webcrawlers all day and it never makes it to my inbox. I started using gmail in this way specifically for features like that (and because its all free!) I wont say that nothing ever gets through because i'd be lying. I get spam every so often, once a month or so, but i just click the 'report spam' button and that gets rid of it while informing google of the spam so they can watch for it in the future.

On a side note, gmail has this wonderful function that searches through your emails for tracking numbers and when it finds one it automatically puts this link on the side, above where the ads show up, which brings you right to the tracking page on ups.com or fedex or whatever. This feature is very convenient for me and i'm hoping it will be available in some way on the G1. I'm guessing nobody knows yet though.

I have 2 Gmail accounts that I use and I've had them for over 4 years. I rarely ever get spam in my Inbox. I can only think of a couple times.
