Ok so I was in the t-mo about to get my G1. So as the guy is pulling up my account info he sees I have another 7 months left on my current contract. I'm alright, cool, I just want to add another two years to the contract so I can get my full discount. Lo and behold, the guy says I can only get a "partial" discount and I asked how much is it then? He replies $320. WTF?! I asked why I can't get the full discount since I'm adding another 2 years? He says since I'm still under contract I wouldn't qualify as a new or upgrading customer, but I can come back in 5 months when I'll be eligible for a upgrade. So moral of the story is that T-Mobile is not treating it's current and loyal customers right, so now I'm stuck with a nokia 1680 for the next few months. I guess it's a blessing because in 5 months who knows what kind offering there will be on android....
umm
this is common practice for all carriers
you could have converted to a family plan and then added a line and got it for 179, or walmart 149.

If you call Customer Care at 611 I think you will be able to re-negotiate something... I never go to T-Mobile stores - I always go through the website or even better I call customer care.
Here is the most recent fact:
20 days after I received my G1 - it started acting up and I requested the replacement. At the first hand cust. rep stated generic answer you cannot do it blah blah - after 15 minutes of talking here is the outcome:
I was "in" the customer return policy (20 days (!?!) since I got it from the website) - and I got brand new device. The only thing what I had to do was to send everything I had the following day and to provide them with the tracking number information after the phone is sent. Order was processed and I got my new G1 couple days ago.
Bottom line - Customer Care is the best to contact in this matter. Explain to them you were looking forward to get this phone ASAP, you don't care if the contract is extended for 2 years, etc - just tell them bottom line - I am crazy about the phone - they will buy the story if you stress it out properly and no worries...
PS. Here is another fact: My wife's 2-year contract expires in Aug 2009 and she can get FULL DISCOUNT through the Customer Care (611)... How? I do not know- but it's kewl ...

T-Mobile US Stock Rom & Android Froyo 2.2 FRG33 (mccm); LinPack 38MP; Quadrant 1750
Im stuck on this contract for another 8 months or so....
so i bought g1 unlocked...
got data addon..
using g1 now..
slightly more expensive but the phone is worth it. each day my love for this phone grows. when my contract ends im going to get the next android device (if it has a physical keyboard)
G1 > Gym > GF
and what, cancel the line and not return the device? this is grounds for cancellation of your account if caught... if not cancelled, t-mobile will probably charge you the full price of the phone i'm guessing if you don't return it... or do you mean pay the extra price of the family plan which wouldn't make sense either
Buy the rumor, Sell the news.
That's weird. When was your last upgrade? My contract was set to expire in July and I was able to get the phone for 179. Granted that I've never gotten an upgrade since I got my MDA 2 years ago. I got a Wing after that but I bought it from my friend.

Ok so i agree that if you go through the right channel you can probably get the G1 for 179...HOWEVER...Its completely ridiculous to try and blast tmobile for this policy. This is the exact same policy as every cell phone provider in the world. Its the same everywhere!!!!!!!!!!!!! duhhh!
They told me since I had 9months to go and since I upgraded a year or so ago to my SK LX I have to wait or pay $360.
I said why can't I just stretch out my contract two more years? They said they can not do that. Keep in mind I've been with T-mobile since the original SK came out and that was several years ago and I have another account that my wife uses longer than that.
I just politely told the guy thank you for his time and I'm glad I have to wait. I would give me more time to reconsider the device and wait for others to release there versions. He of course started to freak a bit, but hey the reality of it is other carriers and other makers are going to release theirs and maybe I'll get a better phone or deal else where.
I'm like that. I'm patient, but when I want something I either just jump on it or I do more research and go else where. Either way I can take my number since who knows who allowed it a while back so either way I'm not out anything.
And for the record that was through customer service aka 611
